Quiz! Can you name the players who featured in Newcastle 4-3 Liverpool, Apr 1996?
“Barnes… Rush… Barnes… still John Barnes… Collymore closing IIIIIIIINNNNNNNN!”
FFT would never want to distract you from the distracting quiz that you’re absolutely doing instead of filling in a spreadsheet – but just take a moment to recall the simultaneous joy and despair from this all-time Premier League classic.
Newcastle were second behind Manchester United with eight games remaining of the 1995/96 season, but had two games in hand and knew a win would draw them level with Alex Ferguson’s side.
What followed here was a ding-dong game at Anfield which ultimately ended in late, late Liverpool victory – but only after both sides had been leading in a gloriously madcap affair.
Kevin Keegan’s famous slump over the advertising hoardings might not have suggested it, but the Magpies boss couldn’t help but sum up the mood of a nation perfectly in his post-match spiel. “After the match I turned to [assistant] Terry Mac, and said: 'I know I should be disappointed, but I'm elated’,” he opined.
As the two sides meet again this weekend on Saturday – this time, with Liverpool gunning for the title – we thought we’d test your knowledge on the men who played in this corker. We’re looking for anyone who got a minute that night, so playing substitutes are included.
Six minutes are on the clock, and then we’d like you to tell us your scores @FourFourTwo – retweets for the good among you who don’t give away answers. Good luck!
