The very unofficial England-ish football supporter’s jumper

Watching England in the cold depths of winter is an unusual experience.

A domestic fixture pile-up between the final roast potato of Christmas and the first firework of New Year? Standard. Cup hopes dashed in early January? Of course! A windswept, rain-sodden midweek trip to Stoke? We’re not sure whether Lionel Messi could hack it, but we’ve done it plenty.

But watching the Three Lions in December? That’s a new one for us. While some of the hardier members of the country might pride themselves in unseasonal displays of short-sleeved bravado this December – imagining themselves to be Terry Butcher or Stuart Pearce just because they’ve left the house without a coat – the rest of us are probably looking for something a bit cosier to show our support for the national team.

When the local pub is decking out its bar in tinsel older than half of Gareth Southgate’s squad, and Chris Rea is navigating a snowy A19 on the jukebox, we instead reach out for that time-held tradition: the cheesy Christmas jumper.

That’s why Lucozade Sport has launched ‘the very unofficial England-ish football supporter jumper’, a knowingly playful mash-up involving the classic Christmas jumper, blended with Lucozade Sport’s love for iconic fan-favourite football kits of the 1990s.

The patriotic pullover is the perfect way to pledge allegiance for England in freezing beer gardens this winter.

Other options would have you covering up your beloved football tops just to keep the feeling in your fingers.

And it looks amazing. Harking back to one of the most celebrated England shirts, these jumpers soon bring to mind images of John Barnes, Bernard Sumner and that music video. But, you know, cosier.

There’s even snowflakes woven perfectly into the design, to really accentuate this year’s unique meeting of an international tournament in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Throw a flimsy paper crown into proceedings and you’ll be the perfect picture of Yuletide joy.

In fact, we reckon it’s the only seasonal sweatshirt that will be adored in equal measure by your mates at the pub and your family on Christmas morning.

‘Three Lucozade Sports on a shirt’ might not have quite the same ring to it as other
well-worn choruses, but we’re willing to bet that anyone who gets their mitts on one of these will have worn it in well enough by the time Boxing Day rolls around.

And we all know that jumpers like these come with plenty of give, so there’s no need to worry about hoovering up one too many leftover turkey sandwiches.

The campaign, which has supporters eager to know how they can secure themselves one of the limited-edition pieces, was shot by Kaj Jeffries and features rapper Niko B and model Deba Hekmat, with styling by Phoebe Lettice.

A very exclusive number of ‘the very unofficial England-ish football supporter jumpers’ are being made – meaning that if you manage to land one of them, you’ll be the envy of every fan in the land.

‘The very unofficial England-ish football supporter jumper’ is Lucozade’s latest foray into fashion following its partnership with Sports Banger for London Fashion Week
2022, where bespoke items were created for the runway.
