Wales will begin their Euro 2020 campaign against Switzerland in Baku on Saturday.
The Dragons enjoyed the best tournament in the history of the national team at the previous edition of the European Championship, as Chris Coleman’s side reached the semi-finals. It was a fantastic achievement for a team with little pedigree of international competition, but repeating the feat five years later will be difficult.
For a start, Wales’ preparation for Euro 2020 has been less than ideal. Ryan Giggs remains their permanent manager but will not be leading the team this summer as he awaits trial on assault charges.
Rob Page, his assistant, will be the man in the dugout for Wales, who have been drawn into perhaps the most open group of the competition.
Italy are the favourites to win Group A, but Turkey, Switzerland and Wales will all have designs on a place in the knockout phase. There is no minnow in this section, but at least one of the four will miss out on the last 16. A positive result in this opening encounter would set Wales up nicely for what lies ahead.
Switzerland have reached the last 16 of the last three tournaments they have entered, but a quarter-final spot must be their ambition this time around. Vladimir Petkovic has been in charge since 2014 and has made the Swiss a modern side that will look to press high up the pitch and defend with a high line.
Switzerland, like Wales, will line up with a three-man backline on Saturday. But while their opponents prefer a 3-4-3, Petkovic favours a 3-4-1-2 with Xherdan Shaqiri as a No.10 behind two strikers, likely Breel Embolo and Haris Seferovic. Gareth Bale, set to be stationed on the right, will look to exploit Ricardo Rodriguez, a left-back who usually plays as a left-sided centre-half for Switzerland.
