What is England's penalty shootout record like at international tournaments?
England are notoriously bad at penalty shootouts – but is this just a myth, and are other countries at World Cup 2022 better?
England's record in penalty shootouts leaves a lot to be desired. Before the 2018 World Cup, the mere thought of a penalty shootout would have left any England fan shuddering, uncomfortable at the thought of the country's best players stepping up, and inevitably, failing from 12 yards.
However, victory over Colombia in the last-16 in Russia renewed optimism. England fans weren't so scared about entering into a penalty shootout - that is, as long as Jordan Henderson stays as far away as possible.
Euro 2020 rolled around, though, and all positivity was crushed when Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their penalties in the final against Italy. At least England fans found out Harry Maguire could hit the ball straight into the stanchion in that shootout.
Unfortunately, the nation has a dismal record for games that go the full distance, making them statistically among the worst at penalty shootouts out of the teams still left in World Cup 2022. Only Morocco are comparably poor in shootouts, but they won their most recent against Spain in the last 16 of the tournament.
Indeed, out of nine total shootouts, England have managed to win just two - against Spain at Euro 96 and in the aforementioned Colombia game from the 2018 World Cup.
Seven losses is simply appalling, starting against West Germany in the semi-finals of Italia 90 and encompassing tournaments from 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006, 2014 and 2021.
Meanwhile, Croatia and Portugal have the two best records in penalty shootouts of the teams still remaining in the tournament, both winning three of the four times they have been involved in the so-called lottery.
