Arsenal will be looking to bounce back from Sunday’s defeat by Burnley when they take on Southampton on Wednesday.
Arsenal’s season went from bad to worse at the weekend, as Mikel Arteta’s side succumbed to a 1-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium. Granit Xhaka’s senseless red card was a significant reason for their defeat, but Arsenal were underwhelming even before they were at a numerical disadvantage.
The Gunners have now won only four of their 12 fixtures to date, and they are as close to the bottom of the table as the top in terms of points. Their principal problem has come in attack, with only Burnley, West Brom and Sheffield United having found the net less often than Arsenal this term. The problems at the club run deeper than Arteta, but the manager will know that a failure to turn results around could cost him his job. The mood at Southampton could hardly be more different. Sunday’s 3-0 triumph over Sheffield United saw Saints move to within two points of the top of the table, and they have now lost only one game since the opening weekend. Ralph Hasenhuttl is doing a fantastic job at St Mary’s, and his team will have no fear going into Wednesday’s meeting with Arsenal in north London. A win for Southampton is 23/10 on Betfair.
Nicolas Pepe is back from suspension following his red card against Leeds last month, but Xhaka is now banned for three games. David Luiz could return after a head injury, while Gabriel Martinelli might be ready for a place on the home team’s bench. Reiss Nelson will also need to be assessed, but Thomas Partey and Sead Kolasinac will play no part. A draw is 5/2 with Betfred.
Southampton have no injury concerns ahead of their trip to the Emirates. Saints have never won a Premier League game at this ground, but they will fancy their chances of ending that run on Wednesday.
