Bassong confirms Arsenal approach
Newcastle United defender Sebastien Bassong says Arsenal are one of the clubs hoping to secure his services this summer, but insisted he is still far from sealing a move away from Tyneside.
The 22-year-old French-born Cameroonian, who made 30 league appearances for the Magpies, is expected to leave the club during the close-season as the North East giants prepare for life in the Championship following their relegation.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Aston Villa have all been linked with restoring the powerful centre-back to the top-flight of English football.
And despite admitting that Arsene Wenger is one of the managers hoping to recruit him, Bassong added that any concrete deal to secure his signature has yet to come to fruition.
“I can confirm there was an approach, but for now nothing is concrete," he said in the Daily Mail when asked if the Gunners had made a move.
“Premier League clubs are interested in me, but nothing is simple because Newcastle are in the middle of a takeover and nobody knows who will be the manager.
"Foreign clubs inquired, but as it is my priority to stay in England, I didn’t respond. Obviously, it would be better if things gathered pace, but I’m not worried.”
