Briefs: Blackburn bag Marseille's Givet
Real Madrid central defender Christoph Metzelder said he will fight to convince coach Juande Ramos that he deserves a regular place but will decide whether his future lies with the Primera Liga champions in the next few months.
"The coach knows what I can do and I am ready for battle," the 28-year-old said in an interview with German newspaper Kicker, adding that he also hoped to win his place back in the German national side.
"I have to make a basic decision in the next few months about what's going to happen," he said. Metzelder is vying for a place in the team with Pepe and Fabio Cannavaro and has a contract with Real through to the end of next season.
French defender Gael Givet (pictured) has been loaned from Olympique Marseille to Blackburn Rovers until the end of the season, the Ligue 1 club said on their website.
Givet, capped 12 times by France, has not played with Marseille this season after falling out with coach Eric Gerets.
Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre said the fighting spirit his players showed in Wednesday's 2-1 King's Cup loss to Barcelona can help them end a run of four straight defeats in all competitions.
"The dressing room is upset with the defeat but confident that with this kind of effort, of fight and sacrifice, we can get back on the right course," the Mexican said on the club's website.
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said it will be a pleasure to play city rivals Espanyol in the last eight of the King's Cup, which take place over two legs next week and the week after.

"It's always a pleasure to take on Espanyol," Guardiola said at a news conference after his side beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Nou Camp to go through to the last eight 5-2 on aggregate. "It's a derby and I prefer it."
