Bristol City and Blackburn could both climb into the play-off places in the Championship with victory on Wednesday night.
Bristol City climbed as high as third in the table last month, but a downturn in form has seen them fall out of the top six. A 1-0 home defeat by Birmingham at the weekend means the Robins have now won only one of their last four fixtures, with their home record having emerged as a particular problem: the Robins have failed to win six of their last seven league games at Ashton Gate, which will give Blackburn confidence ahead of Wednesday’s tussle.
City’s games in recent weeks have tended to be tight, with only one of their last seven games ending in victory or defeat by more than a one-goal margin. Given the prolific nature of Blackburn’s attack, the hosts may be happy to cede the initiative before attempting to hit the visitors on the break.
Blackburn still have the best attacking record in the division following their 2-2 draw with Brentford last time out. Rovers have found the back of the net 31 times in 2020/21, a remarkable return that should really have Tony Mowbray higher up the table. Clean sheets have proved elusive of late - just one in their last six outings - but Blackburn have not lost since a 2-0 reverse against Swansea at the end of October.
Bristol City will again have to make do without Liam Walsh, Joseph Williams and Andreas Weimann for the visit of Blackburn. Steven Sessegnon, Nathan Baker and Alfie Mawson are all closing in on a return to action but none of the trio will be risked here.
Blackburn will be unable to call upon the services of Ben Brereton, Corry Evans and Derrick Williams, as they seek to extend their unbeaten run to seven games.
