Bristol City and Watford will both be looking to maintain their lofty positions in the Championship table when they go head-to-head on Wednesday.
Bristol City have won each of their last three games in the division and head into the midweek round of fixtures in third place. A hard-fought 1-0 victory over Derby at the weekend followed on from prior triumphs over Huddersfield and Cardiff. Dean Holden will not be getting carried away, though, and a meeting with Watford - the pre-season favourites to win the second-tier title - will be a test of his side’s play-off credentials.
City have failed to win half of their six home games so far this term, and have taken more points on their travels than at Ashton Gate. That is why Saturday’s slender success against struggling Derby will have pleased Holden, who took on the managerial reins in August following four seasons as the club’s assistant manager.
Watford are also unbeaten in their last three matches, although their 1-1 draw with QPR on Saturday denied them a third win on the bounce. The Hornets had beaten both Stoke and Coventry 3-2 in their previous two games, which suggests their goalscoring problems are over after a disappointing start to the season in front of goal. Watford certainly have ample firepower in their ranks, with Ismaila Sarr, Joao Pedro, Andre Gray and Troy Deeney all featuring against QPR.
Watford will hope to have Isaac Success available again sooner rather than later, but this match will come too early for the Nigerian. Gray and Pedro are both fit and were taken off against Rangers for tactical reasons, but Tom Cleverley and Christian Kabasele have been ruled out.
Bristol City will have to make do without Nathan Baker, Joseph Williams, Liam Walsh, Steven Sessegnon, Alfie Mawson and Andreas Weimann.
