Burnley will be looking to pull further clear of the Premier League relegation zone when they host last-placed Sheffield United on Tuesday.
Sean Dyche’s side were beaten 1-0 by Leeds last time out, but they have been much improved in recent weeks. That defeat at Elland Road came after a four-game unbeaten run which saw Burnley overcome Arsenal and Wolves, and hold Everton and Aston Villa to draws. The Clarets may well be in for a sustained battle against the drop this term, but Dyche will at least be pleased that his team have rediscovered their grit and fight during the month of December. They will now be looking to end the year on a high by inflicting yet more misery on Sheffield United.
The Blades are still looking for their first win of the campaign, having failed to achieve it in 15 games to date. United suffered their 13th defeat of 2020/21 against Everton on Boxing Day, and are surely doomed to demotion despite the fact that there are still 69 points up for grabs. With just two to their name so far, it would take an extraordinary effort for Chris Wilder’s side to get themselves out of trouble. Another loss at Turf Moor would surely give United too much to do in their fight for survival.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Robbie Brady are both nursing thigh injuries and will not be fit to start against Sheffield United. Dwight McNeil has a tight groin but could be passed fit in time to feature, but Jack Cork and Matej Vydra are unlikely to be involved. Most managers rotate their sides at this time of year, but Dyche may well stick with the starting XI which began the loss to Leeds.
Wilder tried something different against Everton, opting for a 3-4-2-1 formation with Rhian Brewster and David McGoldrick operating behind Oliver Burke. Burke could miss out here with a back problem, while Jack O’Connell, John Lundstram, Kean Bryan and Sander Berge are definitely out.
