Everton will move level on points with Premier League leaders Liverpool if they beat Manchester City on Monday.
The Toffees ground out a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United at the weekend thanks to a late strike from Gylfi Sigurdsson. That was their fourth win on the bounce and moved Carlo Ancelotti’s charges up to second in the standings, with Liverpool now just three points ahead of their city rivals. Everton have looked very solid defensively in recent weeks, conceding only one goal in their last four outings. Keeping Manchester City’s attack quiet will be a tougher task, however.
City have not been as free-scoring as usual this term, but the probable return of Sergio Aguero to the starting XI will immediately increase their firepower at Goodison Park. The Argentina international came off the bench in a routine 2-0 defeat of Newcastle on Boxing Day, a result which moved City to within six points of the summit. Pep Guardiola’s side are still operating below their potential, but the City boss will be delighted that his team now possess the best defensive record in the division, having conceded only 12 goals to date.
Everton’s recent form is all the more impressive when you consider that some of their key players have been sidelined with injury. Richarlison is still out with concussion and James Rodriguez will not feature due to an ongoing calf problem. Allan, Lucas Digne, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin remain on the treatment table too.
Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus are out for City after testing positive for COVID-19, but Aguero is fit again and could lead the line. Eric Garcia is still out, with John Stones and Ruben Dias set to continue their partnership at centre-back. Ilkay Gundogan picked up a knock on Boxing Day but should be fit enough to play at Goodison Park.
