Heskey: I’d still pick Owen for England
Aston Villa and England striker Emile Heskey has praised former international strike partner Michael Owen, and believes the Newcastle forward still has a lot to offer the Three Lions.
The 29-year-old has bagged 10 goals in 29 appearances for the Magpies in a 2008/09 campaign blighted by injury, and has found himself frozen out of Fabio Capello's squads for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign as a result.
However, Heskey, who once forged an effective partnership with Owen and is now repeating the feat alongside Wayne Rooney, believes the former Liverpool man - who needs another 10 goals to beat Bobby Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record of 49 - still has a part to play for his country.
“Obviously playing together from a younger age was good for us," he told FIFA.com. "But I'm a fan of playing a big striker alongside a smaller one.
“To be honest, Michael brings the best out of anyone he plays with, he's so intelligent and plays to his partner's strengths.
“If you look at the time when we played together, he was always at the end of my flick-ons and was in a good position when I could play the ball to him.”
