Manchester United will secure a second-place finish in the Premier League if they beat Fulham on Tuesday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side hold a four-point lead over third-placed Leicester going into the penultimate round of fixtures. United are out of form, however, having lost both of their last two matches in the division. First, an under-strength side went down 2-1 to Leicester last Tuesday, before Liverpool inflicted a 4-2 defeat on their Old Trafford hosts two days later.
Home form has been a problem for United this term. The Red Devils remain unbeaten on the road, with Manchester City the only team to have amassed more points at opposition grounds. However, Solskjaer’s side sit fifth in the home table, and the six defeats they have suffered on their own patch is matched by Brighton.
Nevertheless, United have clearly made progress this season. They are on course to finish in the top two of the Premier League for only the second time since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. United are not a club that can ever be happy with a runners-up placing, but Solskjaer’s side have kicked on in the last nine months.
Fulham, alas, cannot really say the same. They have performed well at times this season, and appeared to have got themselves back into a good position a couple of months back. Since a 1-0 defeat of Liverpool, though, the Cottagers have taken just one point from 24 available. Their relegation to the Championship was confirmed last week.
Scott Parker, whose team are simply playing for pride here, will be without Tom Cairney and Terence Kongolo. Loanee midfielder Mario Lemina is available after being ineligible to face parent club Southampton on Saturday.
Manchester United will again have to make do without Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Dan James and Phil Jones.
