Manchester City boss Guardiola aiming to smash records following title triumph

Pep Guardiola has told his title-winning Manchester City side to keep improving and set new records.

City made light work of Swansea City in their first game since being crowned champions - David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Gabriel Jesus getting on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win.

But Guardiola, who gave his players time off to celebrate their league triumph, says City must not rest on their laurels.

"You have to keep improving, if you think okay we are already champions, we are done, you cannot play like the way we played today," Guardiola told BBC Sport.

"So we spoke to the players in the week about that. If we are improving it will be good for the new season, finishing in a good way.

"It's never unfinished business in football, you have to keep improving. Looking for records helps to keep the players focused. 

"The league is won, now it's the records. The numbers keep the players focused."

One of those records has already gone - City breaking their own mark for the most completed passes in a single Premier League match since 2003-04 with 942.

David Silva gave them the lead inside 12 minutes, before playing a crucial role in setting up Sterling for a tap-in four minutes later.

De Bruyne's thunderbolt put the result beyond doubt early in the second half, before former Monaco playmaker Bernardo Silva netted the rebound from Jesus' saved penalty - the Brazil striker getting in on the act in the closing minutes.

"The important thing is the performance, we played at a quite similar level this season," Guardiola added.

"Swansea have lost just three games with Carlos as manager. It’s not easy against them, we attacked really well.

"When they had the ball we pressed so good and so intense and then when we had the ball we had to keep it moving, moving, moving, playing simple until we had the chance to play a final pass."
