Manchester United are looking bring in a new right-back during the January transfer window and have set their sights on Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

According to The Express, discussions are planned to take place between the two clubs once the World Cup finishes.

Frimpong is currently busy in Qatar with the Netherlands squad, operating as back-up to Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.

Erik ten Hag is actively looking to strengthen the right side of his defence and provide competition for Portuguese international Diogo Dalot.

Aaron Wan Bissaka has been sidelined since he took over as manager, making just one appearance for the club this season.

After a breakthrough season with Crystal Palace, Wan Bissaka moved to Man United for an initial fee of £45million in June 2019 as one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first signings.

A strong tackler, he played regularly under the club’s former manager but has since fallen out of favour because of his limitations going forward.

In contrast, Frimpong has plenty to offer as an attacking threat, with five goals and three assists for Leverkusen already this season.

The club’s form has improved considerably since Xabi Alonso took over at the start of last month, lifting them out of the relegation zone with three consecutive victories ahead of the World Cup break.

Born in Amsterdam, Frimpong has won caps at several age-group levels but is yet to make his debut for the senior national team.

His family moved to England when he was seven years old and he progressed through the Manchester City academy, before leaving to join Celtic in September 2019.

Despite being sent off for a foul on Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos in the Scottish League Cup final, he won the domestic treble in his first season with the club.
