Liverpool will be looking to tighten their grip on top spot in the Premier League when they take on Newcastle on Wednesday.
The Reds were held to a 1-1 draw by West Brom last time out, as Seyi Ajayi’s late goal earned Sam Allardyce’s side a point at Anfield. Liverpool were not at their best on Sunday, but a draw was far from a disastrous result on a weekend which also saw Tottenham, Leicester, Chelsea and Manchester United fail to win. Jurgen Klopp’s side have now gone unbeaten in their last 11 Premier League games, having avoided defeat since that infamous 7-2 demolition by Aston Villa at the start of October. If results go their way this week, Liverpool could begin 2021 with a six-point lead at the summit of the standings.
Newcastle were beaten 2-0 by Manchester City last time out, as Steve Bruce’s side slipped to 14th in the table. The Magpies have taken just one point from the last nine available, and now sit seven clear of the bottom three. Another disappointing result this week could leave Newcastle looking nervously over their shoulders at the relegation zone going into the New Year, but a point or three against the champions would give Bruce’s men some breathing space. We can expect the hosts to sit deep and pack men behind the ball on Wednesday, so Liverpool will have to remain patient if an early goal is not forthcoming.
Klopp will again have to make do without summer signings Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Konstantinos Tsimikas for the trip to the northeast. Naby Keita and Joel Matip are also out, while Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk are long-term absentees.
Newcastle will be unable to call upon the services of Jamaal Lascelles, Martin Dubravka and Allan Saint-Maximin for the visit of Liverpool. Jonjo Shelvey and Ryan Fraser are both doubts, but Callum Wilson is set to return to the starting XI.
