Brighton will be looking to avoid a banana skin when they face Newport County in the third round of the FA Cup.
Graham Potter will be glad to put 2020 behind him. Brighton only won five Premier League games in the last calendar year, but they began 2021 with a creditable 3-3 draw with Wolves. The Seagulls have lacked a cutting edge so far this season and will hope to make a statement against lower-league opposition this weekend.
Newport have been out of action since Boxing Day, with last weekend’s scheduled clash with Southend having been postponed due to a frozen pitch at Rodney Parade. Prior to that the Welsh outfit had gone four games without a win in League Two, yet they still occupy a place in the automatic promotion spots as the midway point of the campaign approaches.
Newport beat Leyton Orient and Salford to make it through to the third round of the FA Cup, a stage of the competition they have advanced beyond in two of the last three seasons. Michael Flynn’s side should not be written off here, particularly as they have lost just one of their last eight home games in all competitions.
Brighton will be unable to call upon the services of Yves Bissouma, whose yellow card against Wolves last time out triggered a one-game suspension. Tariq Lamptey has a thigh injury and will play no part, while Jose Izquierdo and Florin Andone remain on the treatment table.
Aaron Connolly and Danny Welbeck have been struggling with knee issues and will need to be assessed ahead of the game. Potter could hand starting spots to several fringe members of his squad, with Bernardo, Steven Alzate and Andi Zeqiri among those in contention to feature.
Newport have goalkeeper Nick Townsend available for selection once more, while Ryan Taylor is also in line to return. Flynn has used both three and four at the back at times this term and will leave Brighton guessing with his tendency to switch between formations.
