Manchester City will be looking to bounce back from Saturday’s loss to Tottenham when they take on Olympiacos on Wednesday.
Pep Guardiola’s side succumbed to a 2-0 defeat in north London to leave them 13th in the Premier League table. It has been a highly underwhelming start for the pre-season title favourites, with City having taken just 12 points from their first eight games. They have scored far more freely too, netting three times against each of their Group C opponents. Victory in Greece would see them book a place in the knockout phase with two matches to spare.
Olympiacos overcame Marseille on matchday one, but they have lost both of their European encounters since then. Pedro Martins’ side were outclassed by City last time out, as goals from Ferran Torres, Gabriel Jesus and Joao Cancelo brought the hosts all three points at the Etihad Stadium.
Martins will not yet have given up hope of reaching the last 16, but avoiding defeat here will be crucial to those ambitions. A loss to City, coupled with a Porto victory over Marseille, would leave Olympiacos six points adrift of the top two.
Nathan Ake, Fernandinho and Benjamin Mendy are all still out for City, but Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling could come into the starting XI. Guardiola is likely to make full use of the five substitutes at his disposal if his team have a healthy lead in the second half, so some fringe members of his squad will hope for a run-out here.
