Pele pleads innocence in Robinho row

The former Real Madrid man was forced to deny allegations that he has used drugs, which were allegedly recorded without Pele's knowledge at a private function in Brazil, before being broadcast on radio.

And Robinho's team demanded that Pele release an official statement over the incident clarifying his alleged comments, threatening legal action if he failed to comply.

However, Pele has played down the incident, insisting his comments were misinterpreted.

"He is our son and came out of Santos, where he had our supervision," Pele told www.fobazo.com.

"What happened was a misunderstanding and the information was brought to him wrongly. I know how it is for those who must sell newspapers.

"When things like this happen, it is necessary to ask to listen to the tape, to hear what was really said."
