Rangers will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 21 matches in all competitions when they take on Benfica on Thursday.
Steven Gerrard’s side have not suffered defeat since a 1-0 reverse to Bayer Leverkusen at the beginning of August. That loss came in last term’s edition of the Europa League, with the match taking place a few days after the start of the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership campaign. Rangers warmed up for this game in ideal fashion, thrashing Aberdeen 4-0 to move 11 points clear at the top of the Premiership table. Celtic may have two games in hand, but the Gers look to have an excellent chance of winning their first title since 2011. Benfica are also sitting on the same tally, following a thrilling 3-3 draw at Ibrox prior to the international break. That was a rare evening of defensive openness from Rangers, whose strong start to the season has been built on a resolute and solid backline. Indeed, Gerrard’s men have shipped just three goals in 15 league games, and they also kept clean sheets in continental conquests over Lech Poznan and Standard Liege.
Rangers will have to make do without George Edmundson, Jordan Jones and Nikola Katic for the visit of the Portuguese giants. Gerrard will not want to make too many changes to his starting line-up given the strength of his side’s performance at the weekend, but Ianis Hagi and Steven Davis are among those pushing for recalls.
Andre Almeida will play no part for Benfica due to a knee injury, while Pedrinho is a doubt with a muscle problem.
