Riise: 'Amazing' Benitez good enough to turn Real Madrid around
John Arne Riise has told FourFourTwo that his former boss Rafael Benitez is the right man to turn around Real Madrid’s fortunes, and urged Florentino Perez to be patient with the under-pressure boss.
Weekend defeat at Villarreal meant los Blancos slipped five points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga, with rumours of squad discontent intensifying as Benitez struggles with the expectations of expectant Madridistas.
Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly aired his disgruntlement, several other players are believed to have preferred an “easier life” under former coach Carlo Ancelotti, while off-field problems involving Karim Benzema and the club’s expulsion from the Copa del Rey have made Benitez’s return to his homeland increasingly difficult.
But Riise, who was pivotal in Benitez’s Liverpool team that won the Champions League in 2005, says that his former manager can turn things around and believes some rare patience would be rewarded in the Spanish capital.
“It’s such a shame to see him struggling in Madrid, as he is such an amazing person,” Riise said.
“I met him in Oslo, when Madrid were there playing a friendly. He took me to the dressing room and we had a chat.
“He was so excited, and he is a so great to work with – you can talk to him as a person. I hope he can turn it around, he is good enough to, but Madrid is Madrid.
“They have to stick with him. Once he has all his players back fit, then you will see what a talented manager he really is.”

Bobby the boss
Riise is a free agent after completing the second season of the Indian Super League with Delhi Dynamos, who were coached by former Madrid great Roberto Carlos last campaign.
And the former Reds defender has backed his former Brazilian boss to make a step up into management permanently.
“He has become a friend, as he is so easy to approach,” Riise revealed.
“Much like Rafa [Benitez], you can go up to him and ask him anything. That is a great trait for a manager. I don’t know what his plans are, but I would love to play for him again somewhere. He has what it takes.”
