Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby County live stream, Sky Sports, Friday 1 January, 17.30pm GMT

Two interim managers go head-to-head when Neil Thompson’s Sheffield Wednesday face Wayne Rooney’s Derby County on New Year’s Day.

Thompson was installed in the Hillsborough hot seat earlier this week following the sacking of Tony Pulis after just 10 games in charge. The former Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion boss was appointed just a month a half ago but already finds himself out of work after taking only seven points from a possible 30.

Thompson guided Wednesday to their fifth victory of the campaign last time out, overseeing a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough, but his side remain three points adrift of safety ahead of Friday’s clash with a fellow relegation rival. Owls fans will hope he can succeed where both Pulis and Garry Monk failed by leading Wednesday to back-to-back wins for the first time this term.

Derby were also triumphant in midweek, as Rooney’s men ran riot in an excellent 4-0 victory over Birmingham City. England and Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer has done a brilliant job since swapping the pitch for the dugout, with Derby having lost only one of eight games since Rooney was appointed as the club’s sole caretaker manager.

That thumping win at St Andrew’s means Derby are three points clear of the drop zone ahead of Friday’s trip to Hillsborough, although Wednesday would climb above them with a win.

Martyn Waghorn is still suspended for Derby, who are also without Curtis Davies and Tom Lawrence. Given the nature of their victory over Birmingham, Rooney will be tempted to name an unchanged starting XI.

Wednesday will be unable to call upon the services of Joost van Aken, Adam Reach and Aden Flint, but Jack Marriott could shake off a knock in time to feature. Dominic Iorfa is out for the season with an Achilles injury.

Kick-off is at 17.30pm GMT and the game is being shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football in the UK. See below for watching details where you are.

Use a VPN to watch a Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby County live stream from outside your country

If you’re on holiday or just simply out of the country, your domestic on-demand services won’t work – the broadcaster knows exactly where you are from your IP address. Your access to the game will be automatically blocked, which is annoying if you’ve paid a subscription fee and don't want to use an illegal, buffering stream that makes you miss another Jamie Vardy goal. And that's where we recommend ExpressVPN (more on which below).

All you need to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to get beyond such aggravations (assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs). A VPN creates a private connection between your device and the internet, meaning suppliers can’t work out where you are and what you’re doing. The info going to and from is entirely encrypted.

There are plenty of options out there, including:
