Torres: European glory over domestic success
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres says he would rather win the Champions League this season rather than the Premier League.
The former Atletico Madrid front-man has scored nine league goals to date in 2008/09 to help the club climb to second spot, a single point behind Manchester United.
However, the Spaniard has confessed that he is desperate to be a part of Liverpool’s historic European success story, with the Anfield side having won Europe’s top prize five times.
And he admits that winning the Champions League with the Reds would be more satisfactory for him than winning the domestic league title.
“Domestic titles are very important but to win the Champions League you are saying ‘we are the best team in Europe’," he said.
“This club has a great record in the European Cup but now I want to be a part of that history.”
Liverpool face Chelsea in the Champions League quarter finals on Wednesday night at Anfield, with Torres having netted both goals in a 2-0 win against the Blues in February.
And the striker revealed that winning the 2008 European Championships with Spain has helped him to focus on achieving glory with Liverpool.
“Winning the European Championship was a great thing for me. I understood what it was to win a major trophy and what I had been missing," he said.
“On the way back from the competition I made a promise that I wanted more of this success with Liverpool. It doesn’t come any bigger than the European Cup.”
