England defender Ben White has returned home from World Cup 2022 for personal reasons, the Football Association announced on Wednesday.

The Arsenal defender isn’t expected to play any further role at the tournament, a statement said.

White was named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad after a strong start to the domestic season with the Gunners, but he didn’t feature in any of England’s three Group B games.

“We ask that the player’s privacy is respected at this moment in time,” an FA statement said.

Arsenal said on Twitter: “We’re all with you, Ben”

After missing out on selection for the 6-2 win over Iran and 0-0 draw with the United States, White missed Tuesday’s 3-0 victory against Wales with illness.

White, who has four England caps to his name, made 19 appearances in all competitions for Premier League leaders Arsenal this season before the World Cup break.

England’s haul of seven points was enough to earn them top spot in Group B, and they face Senegal next in the last 16 on Sunday.
