Netherlands hero Wout Weghorst made history with his astonishing late double against Argentina in the World Cup 2022 quarter-finals.

The Burnley striker, who is on loan at Besiktas this season, came on for the final 12 minutes of the Oranje’s clash with Lionel Scaloni’s side and transformed the game.

Argentina were 2-0 up and cruising towards the semi-finals until the towering striker entered.

Within five minutes he had headed home to get the Dutch back in it.

Weghorst then netted his second with the last kick of the game, finishing a neat free-kick routine by steering in a low shot in the 101st minute of regulation time.

Opta revealed at full-time that the Dutchman has made history by doing so.

He became the first substitute ever to score twice in a World Cup match for the Netherlands, while his 101st-minute goal was the latest second half goal on record (since 1966) in the knockout stage of the tournament.

Weghorst had previously scored three goals in 18 caps for the Netherlands, and none in his three previous substitute appearances in Qatar.

He mustered just two goals in 20 games for Burnley after joining in January, but has netted six for Besiktas this term in 14 games.
