The big story of the Sweden Euro 2020 squad is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not in it, despite the 39-year-old striker reversing his international retirement decision in January. The AC Milan forward is struggling with a knee injury, and won't be fit in time.

Sweden Euro 2020 squad: Team profile

The delay to Euro 2020 has caused something of a headache for Sweden, confusing a side that previously struck success with a clear defence-first, counter-attacking style. Now they’re struggling to transition towards a new identity, provoked by the emergence of a more attacking generation of talent.

The Euro 92 semi-finalists strolled to Euro 2020 qualification with only one defeat, but results since then reflect the ongoing battle faced by coach Janne Andersson in figuring out his new crop of players. Having previously been a nightmare for top teams to break down, Sweden were steamrolled by France and Portugal in the Nations League; their only win came at home to Croatia, the rest ending in defeat.

Yet if Andersson can balance better forward play with some of their old quality at the back, then he can tap into a huge amount of potential. Alexander Isak’s encouraging second campaign with Real Sociedad – where he is now first choice up front and has been scoring freely in 2020/21 – offers huge cause for optimism, while young playmaker Dejan Kulusevski has stepped up at Juventus to prove his capabilities at the highest level.

Sweden Euro 2020 squad: Who is Sweden's best player?

Alexander Isak

A pacy and consistent forward is essential for Sweden to go far. Isak’s continued success in La Liga shows that the 21-year-old is not to be taken lightly, so finding the way to unlock his ability at international level will be crucial – it has been slow and steady progress with the Blagult up to now.

Sweden Euro 2020 squad: Who is Sweden's manager?

Janne Andersson

Andersson raised the bar by taking Sweden to a World Cup quarter-final. Fans hope he can achieve even more this time, with the help of new attacking talent and a potentially favourable draw.

Sweden Euro 2020 squad: Sweden's past Euros record

Sweden first qualified for the Euros in 1992, and made it all the way to the semi-finals – knocking out a certain 'home of football' along the way.

That has been their best achievement to date, having made it to the quarters in 2004, but failing to make it out of the group in 2000, 2008, 2012 and 2016.
